I believe that new literacies have many benefits in the classroom…WHEN USED CORRECTLY. I believe that new literacies open up a whole new world of exploration, information, and education for our students. It allows teachers to access more new and unique resources. It allows for more interactive and engaging lessons, it saves time, and it allows students to do something they love while learning. Though considering all of this, I do believe that all these benefits have limitations. In some occasions, new literacies can become a distraction, or can become unengaging if it is used for a time period that is too long. New literacies can also overpower a student’s life and become the main source of information and education. This is something that educators need to be consciously avoiding as it is important to have a mix of all the different literacies. A balance is best.
I totally agree that a balance in learning is best, we should never steer towards one learning style, as to expose students to various different skills. I do think it's important to notice that students are literally living in a technology era and there will never be a point in time where they will have to go without - so it is super important that we provide our students with the tools to become literate in these new literacies. I think if used purposefully and intentionally, new literacies would never be considered a distraction or un-engaging. If anything, these new literacies have the potential to bring exciting and engaging content into the classrooms. I feel you have to view these new literacies similarly to the traditional literacy we're used to and treat them with the same importance.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with everything you said! I believe the new literacies are very important, but a balance in learning is best. I agree that students can also face issues with the new literacies being a distraction to students, however, I also can see how they can are engaging and interactive. I think that students should be able to adapt to both ways of learning and be happy and love what they are learning!
